“Adept of the joys of watching, connoisseur of empathy, the flâneur finds the world ‘picturesque.’ ” – Susan Sontag
The flâneur is a critical concept describing a (usually) male subject who observed the pleasures of the unfolding metropolis of the nineteenth century in a disconnected manner. Bicycle riding is a deeply aesthetic practice. Riding transverses the city and country; it bridges the mechanical and the organic. Today, from behind the handlebars of a bicycle, life seems more lovely, and adventure more accessible.
I’m an aging Gen-Xer living in my hometown of San Diego who is an academic by trade. Married and with two daughters, I like to ride bikes, drink coffee & beer, sleep outside as much as possible, and transverse the west coast regularly.
